As someone who has dealt with the challenging symptoms of POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), I understand firsthand the importance of creating a healthy environment to alleviate the effects of this condition. One aspect that I found significantly impactful is the role of air quality in managing POTS symptoms. In this post, I will share my personal insights on how air filters and improving air quality can affect POTS symptoms.
My Struggle with POTS and Air Quality
Living with POTS comes with its set of hurdles, from dizziness to fatigue to heart palpitations. Amidst these struggles, I noticed a pattern in my symptoms based on the air I breathed. Poor air quality seemed to exacerbate my POTS symptoms, making my daily life even more challenging.
Breathlessness is one of the common symptoms of POTS. In fact, it is estimated that at least 65% percent of POTS patients struggle with breathlessness as one of their main symptoms. "The functional impairment in patients with POTS has been compared to that of patients with congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)" [2].
When I first started exhibiting POTS symptoms, it was my mom's first inclination to counsel me to "Take a deep breath". Ha...Ha.
That's when I began exploring the connection between air quality and my health. I found an air purifier on Amazon that I'll share if you are interested in testing the impact of air quality on your own POTS symptoms. Click here for the Amazon associate link. It's a Dyson and has been working for the last 3 years with no issues.
Understanding the Impact of Air Filters
One significant step I took towards improving air quality was investing in high-quality air filters for my living space. These filters not only helped in reducing allergens and pollutants in the air, but it also had a noticeable effect on my POTS symptoms. Cleaner air meant easier breathing, reduced fatigue, and a more stable heart rate, providing much-needed relief. I was so miserable that if I could find something to alleviate a fraction of the breathlessness I was experiencing, it would be worth it.
Among chronic health conditions and lifestyle adjustments improving air quality is important, especially for individuals dealing with POTS.
Take Control of Your Environment
There is an estimated number of people with POTS of 70 million worldwide [1]. POTS should get more attention than it currently does. It has recently received a slight increase in attention in the media because POTS symptoms are common in those who experienced Long-Haul Covid. In the meantime, we must share what improves our quality of life.
If you're also navigating life with POTS or any other chronic condition, I encourage you to consider the impact of air quality on your symptoms. Also, consider having your home tested for mold or mycotoxins. Something as simple as investing in air filters or ensuring good ventilation can make a world of difference in how you feel day-to-day.
In conclusion, taking steps to enhance air quality can play a vital role in managing POTS symptoms and improving overall well-being. By being mindful of the environment we create around us, we can take significant strides towards a healthier and more comfortable life.
Remember, a breath of fresh air can make all the difference.
