Embarking on building your dream home is an exciting but daunting task, especially for first-time builders. I had my heart set on a modern farmhouse aesthetic and wanted to ensure the new home was accessible for my health challenges. It's important to prioritize selecting the right design plan to incorporate conveniences and enhance the functionality of your home. I'll share some of my experiences here.

Personal Story: From Dream to Reality

The journey was filled with challenges and decisions, but seeing the final result—a home that blended contemporary design with rustic warmth—made every step worthwhile. Now, I want to share my experience and insights to help you bring your dream to life.

The first, and most crucial step, in building is selecting the perfect area to build on. Factors that I took into consideration were finding a relatively secluded area with easy access to the main roads. Then I thought about a house design plan that aligned with my vision and needs. Consider factors such as the acreage or size of your lot, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms required, and any specific features you want to incorporate. I looked for design plans that offer open layouts, ample natural light, and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow—a hallmark of modern farmhouse design.

Incorporating accessibility features ensures that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can navigate and enjoy the space comfortably. Consider features like wider doorways, easily accessible closets, lever-style door handles, and walk-in showers. All are possible when working with the right builder to guide you.

Think about the conveniences that will make your everyday life easier and more enjoyable. This could include a well-equipped kitchen with modern appliances, ample storage solutions, and energy efficiency. Don't forget outdoor living spaces, such as a cozy porch or a spacious deck, where you can unwind and connect with nature.

I worked with my builder to ensure that every detail captures the rustic charm of a farmhouse. I had an idea in mind because I grew up in an old farmhouse that was built in the 1800s. Back then I was healthy so the steep incline of the stairs wasn't an impossible feat as it would be today. Due to my POTS, a one-story floorplan was a must so that it would be accessible.

Building is about creating a home that reflects your personality and values. Embrace the journey, savor the moments of decision-making and design, and celebrate the milestones along the way. Remember, the end result will be more than just a house—it will be a home where memories are made for years to come.

Embarking on the journey of building your dream house is an adventure filled with possibilities and opportunities to create a space that is uniquely yours. I will share with you some steps and aspects of the design and construction process to help you turn your dream into a reality.
